We all have public transportation regrets, like watching where we sit. Dame Helen Mirren offered hers recently, disclosing how she wishes one incident could have gone differently.
The Telegraph's Hannah Furness reports on a chance moment to divulge a transportation anecdote for the 69-year-old actress.
While attending the Roundabout Theatre Company's 2015 Spring Gala, Mirren was reportedly asked to offer a "horror story." The actress obliged with a tale of a New York do-gooder and a strict subway official.
It all occurred when she was set to attend a celebration at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. At some point along the way she and her husband were shut off from the subway doors. It's then that a man held the doors open so they could get in.
We will let her describe the details: "I was rushing to go to the theatre with my husband and some friends, and the subway drew in. We ran to get it, and I ran ahead of them and put my hand through the closing doors to hold it open."
Mirren continues, "This very nice man jumped up and held the doors open so we could all come in and sit down. And then the train got sort of stuck. The subway police came along and said who is responsible for holding the train, and this guy said 'I am'."
Unfortunately, the anonymous gentleman was squired from the train: "And they took him away as I'm sitting there."
Previously Mirren made headlines from an unsuspecting photo op. Instagram user Jason Lowe snapped off a picture of this celebrity riding public transportation like the rest of us who don't command respect for their acting chops.
If that image wasn't endearing enough, consider that a small gesture continues to resonate with Mirren.
She told reporters, "To this day I want to apologize to him. I should have got up out of my seat there and then and said he did it for me, it was my fault. But we were late to the theatre so I sat there."
The whole thing has her thinking she is a "terrible person." But we might offer that she needn't worry, because we have all been apathetic to the plight of others while riding public transportation at some point or another. The experience seems to milk that sentiment from each of us.
Every once in awhile, however, someone steps up to offer a seat or hold open a door. Say thank you to them. And, if you know who this gentleman is-someone who has undoubtedly been spinning a yarn about getting kicked off a train for Helen Mirren-please inform him that the actress is most definitely sorry for the experience.
