A tragic incident occurred
aboard the Norwegian Viva last week when a crew member went overboard during a
Caribbean sailing, prompting a coordinated search that, sadly, ended without
success.
According to Cruise
Hive, the incident occurred on April 9 while the ship was sailing away
from its latest port call in Costa Maya, Mexico,
in the middle of a seven-night itinerary that began on April 5, 2026.
At roughly 7
p.m., as many passengers were enjoying dinner, the Prima-class vessel suddenly turned
around to scan the surrounding waters after reports that someone may have gone
overboard.
The captain later
made an announcement about the situation, and photos from the scene showed floodlights
illuminating the surrounding waters as crew members carried out a search that
lasted nearly two hours.
In an official
statement later given to Cruise
Hive, Norwegian
Cruise Line confirmed the situation and detailed its response.
“On the afternoon
of April 9, 2026, a crewmember went overboard near Costa Maya, Mexico. Upon
confirming the incident, the vessel immediately informed the Mexican Rescue
Coordination Centre (MRCC) and a coordinated search and rescue operation was
initiated with no success,” a spokesperson said.
Other ships in the
area also joined the effort, in line with maritime protocols that require
nearby vessels to assist in potential man-overboard situations. Eventually,
Mexican authorities took over the search, allowing the ship to resume its
course.
Unfortunately, the
search ultimately proved fruitless.
“The search and
rescue operation has since been suspended. The family of the crewmember have
been notified of the incident,” the cruise line confirmed on the evening of April
11. "The safety, security, and well-being of our crew is our highest priority. Our thoughts are with the crewmember’s family during this difficult time.”
Because Mexican
authorities took over the search and released the Norwegian Viva from further
obligation, the ship was able to return to Galveston, Texas, on schedule on
April 11 and conclude its sailing on schedule. It has since repositioned
(without guests) to Miami ahead of a transatlantic voyage that departs April
14, which will be followed by a summer season in Europe.
Speculation
suggests that the as-yet-unidentified crew member who went overboard
voluntarily jumped, although no official word has been given about the
circumstances surrounding the incident.
Such secrecy is typical
in cases like this, since cruise lines and authorities seek to protect the
privacy of those involved, especially while investigations are ongoing.
