Disney Celebrates 20 Years at Animal Kingdom
Entertainment Emily Krause May 04, 2018

On April 22, Disney’s Animal Kingdom celebrated its 20thAnniversary while simultaneously observing Earth Day with a “Party for the Planet.” It’s no coincidence that the two celebrations fall on the same day. In fact, Animal Kingdom’s purpose is to connect us with the magic of nature.
Magic is something that Disney does exceedingly well, and it’s incredible to see park guests getting excited about conservation. Every detail of the park points toward ways we can admire and care for the earth while keeping that signature Disney Magic.
Party for the Planet kicked off on Sunday, April 22nd at the Orlando park with an opening ceremony in the Festival of the Lion King theater. Guests were treated to a rousing performance by the Tam Tam Drummers as well as appearances from several Disney characters.
Animal Kingdom’s vice president, Djuan Rivers, talked about Disney’s conservation efforts, such as raising over $70 million for the ‘Reverse the Decline’ campaign. Money raised through the Conservation Fund goes toward research and action to help endangered species.
UP! A Great Bird Adventure
Another highlight of the day was the opening of a new show featuring Russell and Dug from the movie UP! UP! A Great Bird Adventure is located in the Asia section of the park, and features birds from around the world and includes education and information about the birds as they perform tricks and fly around the theater.
Russell and Dug are a cute addition to the show, drawing in young kids who otherwise might find the information over their heads. The energy of working with live animals can’t be matched and comes with some bloopers that provide some laughs and very human moments.
Overall, the birds were impressive, and watching the trainers’ passion for the animals they work with was inspiring. In keeping with the theme of conservation, the show also challenges kids to explore their own neighborhoods and appreciate the natural world around them.
Pandora Utility Suit
Another new addition to Animal Kingdom is the Pandora Utility Suit, a ten-foot-tall mechanical suit controlled by a pilot who talks about the importance of conserving life on Pandora – the World of Avatar. The giant robot-looking suit will fascinate young kids. It’s definitely a highlight of the Pandora region of the park.
Party for the Planet Experiences
Throughout the Party for the Planet celebration, guests will get to partake in a few special features at Animal Kingdom. At Rafiki’s Planet Watch, families can get a backstage tour through the Science Center, Animal Nutrition Center, and Veterinary Hospital.
This is an awesome experience for kids because it shows Disney’s attention to detail and level of care for their animals and the planet. For example, you’ll learn about how the Animal Nutrition Center is a zero-waste facility, how exact and high-quality the animals’ diets are and what type of research the Disney scientists work on to keep the animals happy and healthy.
Young Wilderness Explorers can add the special Earth Day badge to their collection while learning about the importance of nature. And the whole family can pose for photos around the park with the Reverse the Decline PhotoPass frames.
Party for the Planet Food
If you’ll be at Animal Kingdom through May 5th, you can try an Impossible Burger, a veggie burger with the taste and texture to rival even your favorite all beef burger. You can find it at Restaurantosaurus, and I guarantee if you don’t tell your kids that it’s a veggie burger, they won’t even know what they’re eating is a healthy, plant-based delight.
But don’t worry! You can still get your sugar fix with a limited-edition Party for the Planet cupcake or Tree of Life cupcake for dessert. They’re beautifully decorated to honor the planet, and loaded with buttercream.
20th Anniversary Merchandise
If you love to commemorate the big celebration with memorabilia, check out the nature-inspired merchandise such as t-shirts, hats, home goods, and purses. If your kids loved the Avatar Flight of Passage ride, be sure to buy a special edition Avatar Interactive Banshee!
Party for the Planet goes through May 5, but Animal Kingdom is always focused on how to better connect with and protect our earth and its inhabitants. Even when the party is over, families can look forward to Donald's Dino Bash opening in DinoLand at the end of May!
