Good news, India. You are getting a Burger King in New Delhi, but the line starts all the way back on eBay.
The Wall Street Journal's Newley Purnell (h/t Engadget) reports the brand spanking new Burger King location is set to open on Sunday at the Select City Walk Mall in New Delhi. Although that is hardly the end to the intriguing parts of the report.
It seems the queue for would-be burger buyers starts all that way back in the virtual world, on eBay.
Purnell writes, "Through Wednesday, customers can pay a promotional price of 128 rupees ($2.08) with a credit card, debit card, or online bank transfer for a Whopper."
While the listing has ended, you can take a peek at the online page.
Plunking down the nominal fee got you a voucher for one future sandwich as well as a promotional t-shirt.
Like a person trying to find the appeal of the BK Big Fish, we are at a loss. Purnell attempted to get word as to why anyone would pre-order a burger that would be presumably available on Sunday either way. We can see ordering a slow-cooked meal hours ahead of time, giving the chef ample time to prepare the food. But Burger King sandwiches take all of a few minutes-although it sometimes feels like hours.
In any case, the new location is getting quite the Internet buzz for the ploy, so perhaps we have found our answer.
And the other bit of news is that the location seems to be beef free, which is a nod to religious practices in India. To that end, Burger King is offering chicken and veggie fare, later rolling out mutton versions of its popular burgers.
So come on down with voucher in hand. We imagine there are more than a few locals who now have their Sunday meal all planned out thanks to this peculiar restaurant celebration.
