While what's on the inside continues to count immensely, it's what's on the outside that might score you a free meal at this restaurant in China.
Shanghaiist reports on a restaurant in Zhengzhou, Henan, that is throwing one peculiar deal at the moment, giving a free meal to patrons they deem beautiful.
According to the report, a visitors' face is scanned into a machine, which then sends the images to a crack squad that mulls over whether the person in question is worthy of a free meal. It's like a culinary game of Hot or Not.
Here is a look at the sign that once sat out front, via Twitter:
The Telegraph's Tom Phillips has more on Jeju Island restaurant, writing that the eatery offering Korean cuisine promises, "the 50 most handsome people to arrive at its gates each day will be spared paying their bills."
While the promotion remains distasteful, it's the method to the madness that should really bring a pall on those poor souls who are told they must pay like all the other ugly people in the world.
According to the report, once you are scanned the images are sent to a team of plastic surgeons who are being promoted by the restaurant, so it seems this is a joint venture of sorts.
The surgeons get some depressed potential clients and the restaurant gets International media hype. It's a win-win across the board, save those of us with, you know, human imperfections.
Phillips reports that authorities would take down the sign they considered "garish." Although the practice of sizing people up seems to be a spat of good business, because the restaurant's manager proclaimed the beauty contest will go on.
Phillips quotes Xue Hexin as stating, "We will be more prudent with our advertising in future, but the promotion will continue despite the demolition of our sign."
The rest of us will gladly frequent other establishments who, thankfully, don't charge based on looks. This writer is well aware that his mug is worth the price listed on the menu. I don't need a team of experts to remind me that there should only be one eyebrow and that maybe a diner serving salads would be a better option for my proportions.
However, if you want to find out if you are beautiful in the eyes of some random surgeons hoping to lock you into expensive procedures, China seems to be your place.
