A Bulgarian river cruise ship crashed into a concrete wall while sailing the Danube River, sending 11 people to the hospital with injuries.
The vessel was sailing near the town of Aschach an der Donau, Austria, when it was “suddenly no longer able to maneuver,” according to local police. The ship ran into a concrete wall as it was leaving a lock chamber.
“The second captain of the ship, who was operating the helm at the time, immediately pressed the emergency switch, whereupon the electronics started again and he was able to steer the ship out of the lock,” according to police. “He docked the cruise ship at the quay wall and notified the emergency services and the lock supervisor.”
The vessel had 142 passengers on board, most of whom were from Germany. Of them, 11 were taken to a hospital with injuries and six more suffered less serious injuries.
It’s not clear why the ship malfunctioned, but it was able to continue its voyage to Linz. The ship suffered some minor damage on its side walls. Police did not reveal the name of the ship, nor the cruise line.
